Mental Health - We all have it!

We often only think of physical health. We go to the doctor once a year, at least, for a wellness check. We have our blood levels checked, our heart, our lungs, etc. We also check our spirit by being one with nature, attending religious services, praying, or meditating. What are you doing for your mental health?

"What is mental health?" you ask. Mental health encompasses your emotions, thoughts, life experiences (both good and bad), how you process those aspects, perceive the facets, and how you choose to exhibit behavior. Mental health includes stress, relationships, goals, coping mechanisms, and anything else that entails your feelings, thoughts processes, behaviors, and social interactions.

Have you had a mental health check up? "How do I do that?" you ask. Mental health professionals include psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed professional counselors to name the most commonly known. Psychiatrists focus on the medical side of the brain, provide testing and may prescribe medication. A psychologist may provide testing and some counseling. A licensed professional counselor, which is what I am, provides mental health assessments, counseling, and coaching. Counselors are the feelings people, as I often say.

"How often should I check on my mental health?" you ask. I recommend if you are not seeing a mental health professional on a regular basis, at least once a year. I recommend scheduling it right before your wellness check, so if the mental health professional has recommendations for your physical doctor, you may resolve it in one visit.

Sometimes there are medical conditions that may cause or affect your mental health. For example, if a person has a thyroid imbalance it may cause or affect anxiety and depression. Many individuals only take care of their body, but neglect their spirit and mind.

Are you caring for your mind?

Next time...how do I find a counselor?
